Minding your manners online

imageJust about everyone I talk to these days is aware of the buzz around Social Media. Either you’ve jumped in wholeheartedly, are starting to test the waters, or are too overwhelmed by options to know where to begin. Regardless of which group you fall into, it is important to be sure you are minding your manners as you enter into this new arena.

Since Social Media is still such an emerging field, the rules are still being written.  However, some basic rules of engagement should be observed as you get your feet wet.

+ Remember your audience. You are participating in conversations that may be viewed by people unknown to you.

+ Create a good first impression. Be yourself and put the best of you online.  No need to share pictures of you drunk at a party.  Email anything questionable privately.

+ Protect your personal brand.  Everything you do online contributes to your personal brand.  The first thing I do is Google someone before I meet them.  Be sure you know what comes up on your own Google search.

Kendall’s Rule of Thumb for online posting:  If you don’t want your parents, employers, future employers, children or Oprah knowing about it, don’t post it online.
