Leaving work at the door…
You would imagine, like most people, at the end of my day I’d like to shake off the pressure of my job and leave work at the door. But that is the curse of being a graphic designer—it is impossible to escape your profession. From a simple walk home to flipping through the channels, I am aware of the type treatments, info graphics, and logos that surround us all. Sometimes, my wife, Rosanna, gives me a sigh when I’m complaining about an ugly restaurant menu or storefront sign; but I guess we all have our flaws. Nonetheless, the great thing about being a graphic designer is that I am able to put the same talent and energy into my own projects that might otherwise seem like a chore.

A great example of this is when Rosanna asked me to handle designing our wedding invitations. At first I had a slight panic attack, worrying about being able to please her while producing something I also enjoyed. But once I began the project I realized what a rewarding and memorable experience it would be. Through connections I have at VCU’s Department of Graphic Design, I was able to print the invitations at the Bowe House Press. Bowe House is an up and coming studio offering full letter-press and polymer plate options—a rarity in the current market of digital and offset printing. During this month long process I began to understand how fulfilling it is to place your time and energy into a project that will yield lasting results.
Now, as I join PUNCH as the newest designer, I look forward to the many opportunities I have to put my talents and energy into fulfilling their client’s visions—creating work with a lasting impact.
